PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The China: Language & Culture at Peking University program is affiliated with Peking University (PKU), a major research university located in Beijing. The university, which was founded in 1898, is consistently listed as one of the highest ranked universities in China.
Students in the CSU IP China: Language and Culture at Peking University program take Chinese language and culture courses at PKU’s School of Chinese as a Second Language (SCSL). Chinese language courses are offered at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. Students take a language placement exam upon arrival to determine their level. All students are required to take conversation, reading and writing courses. Students may also take Listening in Chinese, Writing Chinese Characters, Newspaper Readings, and other special subjects in Chinese economics, history, music, politics, and religion.
Courses in English are available through the "China Series" program. Students can take 1-2 courses from the Series and should be aware that enrollment is limited.
At the elementary level, students take 20 hour per week of intensive language classes emphasizing grammar, reading, speaking, and listening. CSU IP students at the elementary level do not take electives. At the intermediate and advanced levels special topics and electives are available. Students who score highly on their language placement test may be permitted to take courses from regular departments at PKU if permission is granted from the department.

LOCATION
The China: Language & Culture at Peking University program is located in Beijing, the capital city of China. Beijing is one of the most populous cities in the world with over 21 million inhabitants. Beijing is the second largest Chinese city by population after Shanghai and is the nation’s political, cultural, and education center. PKU’s School of Chinese as a Second Language, where most students take classes, is situated in the western part of campus amidst the international student complex known as Shao Yuan. This complex includes dormitories, cafeteria, post office, coffee shop, as well as classrooms and offices.
HOUSING
Upon arrival in Beijing, students are provided with temporary accommodations arranged by CSU IP. During the orientation week, the on-site staff will provide students with housing information and assist them in finding permanent accommodations. Most students live in local apartments, and there may be limited availability in dormitories.
