Follow these 8-step pathways to your global experience.

 

Step 1: STUDY: Learn About Study Abroad & Away

Start by watching our Study Abroad 101 video, learning about the mission, vision, and learning outcomes for the Study Abroad & Away office. Plan to participate in Study Abroad Week activities to learn about upcoming study abroad and away opportunities. Join our Interest List if you want us to inform you about upcoming events, info sessions, workshops, meetups, etc. related to studying abroad and away. And check out our Events Calendar for details on what's coming next!


Step 2: PREPARE: Identify Your Goals

Think about what your goals and priorities are for a study abroad or away experience. What do you want accomplish personally, academically or professionally? What type of learning environment do you prefer? Are there particular regions you are interested in or academic offerings you are looking for? How long do you want to be away? Take some time to identify your goals and think through your program preferences, which will help guide your program search and planning.
 

Step 3: ADVISING: Meet with Study Abroad & Away 

We recommend students meet with a Study Abroad & Away Advisor to discuss their goals and program options. Visit the Contact Us page to set up an advising appointment with one of our staff based on your interests.  
 

Step 4: RESEARCH: Search Program Options

Use the program search filters here on the Spartans Abroad Portal (SAP) to research the best program that fits your personal, academic and professional goals. You can click on the save icon for each programs that you wish to save to your account. You will need to login to SAP using your normal.  Search programs now. 
 

Step 5: TALK with Academic Advisor

We highly recommend you meet with your Academic Advisor to determine what programs offer courses that would fulfill graduation requirements and whether the programs you are considering would fit into your overall degree plan.
 

Step 6: APPLY: Submit Application

Once you've selected a program to apply to, click the “Apply Now” button on the program's brochure within the Spartans Abroad Portal. Create an account, complete a program-specific questionnaire and submit any other required documents to complete your application. Be sure to review any course prerequisites or other eligibility criteria before submitting. You can only apply to one program per term.
  • For students applying to programs sponsored by our partners CSU International Programs (CSU IP) or International Student Exchange Programs (ISEP), you will need to complete an additional application through the partner organization, after submitting your application through the Spartans Abroad Portal.
  • For students applying to Summer School Abroad and Alternative Break Programs, there may be additional application steps to complete. View these pages for more details on the application process for all short-term programs, including Faculty-Led Programs, Summer School Abroad and Alternative Break Programs. 


Step 7: NEEDS: While Awaiting Decision

While awaiting for your application decision email from SpartansAbroad@sjsu.edu, start working on some of the items needed for a successful study abroad experience:
  • Passport - Apply or renew your passport if the expiration date is less than 6 months from the end of your program.
  • Finances - Meet with the study abroad specialist at the Financial Aid Office to understand the terms of your financial aid package and what you can use to cover your study abroad expenses; check out and apply for the various SJSU or national scholarships. Use the cost in the program brochure to discuss with your parents / guardians about the program cost and personal expenses.
  • Writing Skills Test (WST) - You need to complete the WST requirement before you leave for your study abroad program. Visit the WST website to learn how to fulfill that requirement. 
  • Commitment to Participate Agreement - You will be required to agree to the terms of the Commitment to Participate Agreement within 10 days of your acceptance into your program. We highly suggest you review and understand it thoroughly to avoid any confusion or problems. View Short-Term - Approved Agreement.pdf


Step 8: SATISFY All Requirements

Once you are accepted into a program, you will need to log into your Spartans Abroad Portal (SAP) account to see the checklist of required documents and actions to complete. Failure to complete the requirements may lead to program disqualification.
